Recycling Candles

I got lucky this year. My sister-in-law gave me a Scentsy candle warmer for Christmas. (I didn't even know what a Scentsy candle warmer was until November, but that's beside the point.) I was/am super excited!

But at the same time, I was a little sad because Scentsy doesn't have my all-time favorite candle sent: Grapefruit Vanilla. And what was I supposed to do with my precious candle? Throw it in the garbage?

Umm. No.

First, I melted it down using a candle warmer. (Yeah - it took forever; one of the reasons I'm super excited to make the switch to my Scentsy warmer.)

Then I poured it into an ice cube tray, and set it in the freezer for about 20 minutes for it to harden. To remove the wax, I just wrung the tray over a paper towel and the cubes popped right out. (If you'd like to do the same, don't skip the freezer; it's the key to removing the cubes with ease.)

I got excited, and did the same to every candle in the house! Let's just say Justin is happy I've settled on one scent for a while...

***ETA:  Apparently, I've upset some people. When I posted this DIY idea I had no idea of the amount of traffic that it would generate, and I had zero intentions of hurting sales of any company or self employed persons, and I apologize!

For the record, I am a Scentsy customer. I really love their wax and this idea was just a way for me to use up some of my favorite scents already on hand. Unfortunately, I didn't know about the lifetime warranty of my Scentsy warmer, or the fact that using any wax other than from their company voids that warranty.

Also, for those of you who own other warmers or (taking the above into consideration) still want to try this trick, I haven't had any issues with the couple of Salt City candles I "converted." They have melted fine at the low heat, smelled great, and wiped out of my warmer just as easily as the Scentsy wax I regularly use.

  10. One of the problems you may encounter, besides the warranty issue, is the melt point. Scentsy warmers utilize a low watt bulb to melt the specially formulated Scentsy wax, candle wax in harder with a lower scent load, thus you will not get optimal results. BUT, at least you have eliminated the wick, which is a step in the healthy and safe direction. If you would like a sample of Scentsy wax for comparison, feel free to email me! Meredith Eckard, Independent Scentsy SuperStar Director firefreescents.com ps. Jen- you can host a party and earn free Scentsy ;) or even join to sell and cut out some of your own bills...

  13. the other point is that it's a way to use up half burned candles you may have around your home. Don't want to void your Scentsy warranty? Buy the similar burners that Walmart carries. They're about $15 each. There you go.

  15. Hi there, I know this is an older post, but its all over pinterest and while that is very nice for you, its very bad for Scentsy AND their customers.
It would be extremely nice of you if you could consider removing this post or place a disclaimer letting the readers know that this will void the lifetime warranty of their Scentsy warmer, since I'm sure most do not know that is what they are doing.
Scentsy is a wonderful company and its very nice of them to offer the lifetime warranty, but it can not be honored it you are using their warmers in this manner.
    Thank you!

Just like a shirt or something, she wants to cut it up to make it a cute design like in stores, let her do it, is it personally hurting you? Umm not thinking so. Yes I currently bought some scentsy wax, but not a warmer, wanna know what I'm gonna do with it??? Put them in little glass containers and put them on the exact candle burner I use, because I can't afford a heater, should that be a problem too? Am I not honoring scentsy???

  16. I agree with Ariana and the previous Scentsy posters. While I agree you save money and get to use your favourite scents which Scentsy does not carry, you are going against was that company stands for. Scentsy does offer over 80 scents, I am sure you will find some you will enjoy in your warmer or future warmers. Besides, you will not be able to enjoy the full scent of the melted down 'candle' scents because Scentsy warms with a lower wattage bulb and candles burn at a higher temp.

I work a full time job working 40+ hours a week, I sell Scentsy full time, I am a part time college student with a husband and a 3 year old to support since my husband had surgery. So don't diss on us Scentsy consultants and tell us to get a real job. Scentsy pays better than half the "real jobs" out there and we have fun doing what we're doing. I sell Scentsy as a way to get out of the house and have fun while also making money! It is a real job!
And yes, by doing what she is doing in this post, it will void your warranty and the wax won't melt as well because it is not designed to be melted by a lightbulb. But if that's what she wanted to do to save money and still be able to use her favorite candle, more power to her!

  18. I'm a little confused. If your candle warmer worked to melt the candle, then why couldn't you just make your house smell like grapefruit vanilla without making the cubes? Or why couldn't you just burn the candle by lighting its wick? You just put the cubes around your house and they weren't melted in any way after that, right? How does the smell of these little cubes scent your house as well?

A Scentsy warmer (or similar warmers at Walmart), has a little dish that sits over a lightbulb. You put a tiny block of wax in the dish and it melts/emits the scent that way.

You're right. My warmer worked, but it takes much longer to melt the whole candle vs. a small cube. :)

  23. I LOVE this! All the Scentsy people need to relax. Any ideas of how to melt down the candles for those who don't own a candle warmer?

    1. put you a pot on the stove on low, my friend used one of those little egg skillets.. of course you risk setting the wax on fire if you get it too hot. Those candle warmers with the hot plates on the bottom have been known to get hot enough to bust the glass that holds the candle, resulting in a fire hazard. You use shortcuts and take risks or you can use a scentsy warmer and save yourself a chance on getting hurt or burning your house down. I think the author had a great idea for using up candles and getting the most out of them. I will be recycling my own candles in this manner.

Oh and for the record...being a scentsy consultant IS a real job, whoever posted that is just jealous cause they don't have as much fun at their own job. As far as being expensive, you get way more for your money with scentsy wax as opposed to buying those high priced jar candles, AND you are not supporting some corporate monster like walmart, but a hard working, (mother most likely) who is trying to earn some money and take care of her family. And to the person who refuses to buy from direct sales companies, do you shop at walmart, target, etc....you know with them it IS all about the money. Just sayin....

    2. When I was a kid (before scented candles), we would take a coffee can & put all of our old candles in it. We would take old crayons & put those in there too (depending on the color we'd like to make). We'd melt it on the burner on low & no one ever thought of burning the house down. My opinion, we have too many specialized items. Who needs a candle warmer? Just use an old coffee can. They're also a lot easier to clean. The old pieces of crayon will make your candles any color you'd like. We made new candles. I still haven't figured out what these ice cube wax things are for.... Any idea????? Please let me know. I didn't think I was that old, or out of it. Thanks. Enjoy your PINS!

    1. I have melted wax in the glass jars to use for candle dipping. I do candle dipping at camp among other places. We go very low tech and cheap...coffee can placed in another pot or skillet with water in it. The glass should work fine. You keep the heat low and watch that the water does not evaporate. I have a friend who uses her crock pot for the same thing....heat the water in the crockpot and put the glass candle in to melt. keep the water low enough that it does not spill over the top into the candle....

    2. i have used a crock pot to melt the wax. You can also hand dip your own candles or use a small laddle and make all sorts of shapes in those silly silicone molds. Its a low setting, no burns, no fires. The kids love to do this too. Also, with crayons you can use the old bits and make swirl ones with cupcake pans in the oven.

Buy a thicker glass votive holder or the thick glass extra large tea light holder(which worked great for standard size scallop tarts) for a few bucks at walmart or just an old coffee cup and use the 5.00 candle warming plate drop the cubes in place container on the warmer and enjoy. I found the better home and garden cubes as well as tarts bought from online diy'ers last wayyyyy longer than my scentsy and every one of them melted just fine and cleaned up just fine in my plug in style scentsy warmer. When youre ready to change out wax just place whatever container you need to get wax out of in the freezer for 15 minutes or so and the wax will pop right out. Happy melting y'all :)

To the people talking about how this idea hurts Scentsy's business, I just want to let you know that I hadn't even heard of Scentsy before reading this post, and now I'm tempted to buy one of these warmers. Rather than accusing this blogger for taking away business, I'd consider thanking her for coming up with a fantastic craft idea that turned into a brilliant marketing strategy for Scentsy. Thanks to the appearance of this idea on Pinterest, lots of people will now know about Scentsy. Yes, this idea reuses old candles, but this post also praises the Scentsy warmer. Side note, this is the reason you don't mention brand/company names in a blog post before talking to them first. I'm a Nurse so I don't feel like I'm wrapped up in it (in the cult.) If you all keep pushing - you turn your business away. Stop being negative, stop pushing & you may see a turn around. Hate it, but after seeing all of the hate these pushers, I mean reps, have thrown at a blogger for finding a better way, I'm glad they will NEVER have a dime of my money :) Lovely post, and I hope you tell them where to stick their burner! :)

  34. When I switched to Scentsy I saved a few of my old candles for if/when the power goes out. The rest I melted and made "fire starters" for when we go camping (can use for outdoor fire pits, fireplaces, wood stoves, etc.). I just put the candle jar in a pan that had water in the bottom, then warmed it up until the wax had melted. See the "how to" below. Also, since Scentsy wax never actually burns off, I use the leftoever wax to make firestarters as well. :o)

    Dryer Lint Eggs
Take balls of Dryer Lint and place them in an empty egg carton. Cover with melted wax. Use old candles or paraffin wax, let cool, and store in ziplock bag. Be careful when melting wax because it can ignite. Use a double boiler to be safe. Sawdust or shredded paper works in place of lint, too.

P.S., sorry you were "blasted" by the Scentsy reps ~ not all Scentsy reps are like that! :o)

  45. This is an awesome idea.

While I think the point about the non-Scentsy wax voiding the warranty is a good one to bring up, I think that is all it needed was to be brought up. Using the $10 charger on my cell phone that I bought at the corner store voids the warranty on my phone, too. However, I really wasn't worried enough about that to pay 3 times as much for one at the ATT store.

Really gives you pause for thought, though. If one little post has the power to bring consultants to financial ruins, how stable is this career choice? I don't hear McDonald franchise owners whining when someone posts a recipe for a good hamburger.

    ReplyDelete
  46. This is an absolutely fantastic idea!

For the Scentsy consultants throwing a fit: You're making the company look bad. Once a warmer has been purchased, it is up to the user to decide how to use it, whether it voids the warranty or not. Stop trying to guilt people into buying your product.
At the moment, I'm disgusted by your behavior and if anything, my business would be lost not because of the post by the author, but by the posts of some of the consultants. I reuse my wax to make emergency candles when the scent wears out.

    ReplyDelete
  47. If it voids the warranty...just buy one from Walmart! No more Scentsy problem!

    ReplyDelete
  48. A great idea!

To the Scentsy consultants WHINING, I say shut up. It is not the bloggers responsibility to continue to purchase your overpriced CRAP if your pathetic company does not carry her favorite scent. Also, how is that executive level income working out for you? How much debt have you gone into since opening your own "business?". Enjoy what you can while it lasts. Scentsy won't be around in ten years anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Wow, shame on people who are complaining because you are resourceful and trying to help others! Attempting to FORCE people into buying your product isn't a great business strategy. There are any number of valid reasons why people might want a DIY solution instead of purchasing Scentsy refills. You don't owe anyone an apology or explanation for this clever idea.

  50. I LOVE the idea! I have so much unused wax that I paid good money for & don't want to just throw away. As for the Scentsy people. it's a candle warmer w/ a lightbulb in it. they aren't the only company that make them & it's not up to them what the warmers are used for once the customer buys it. Wax wipes out easily if it is a "Scentsy" wax or not. The warmers are ceramic. These "SCentsy" consultants are gonna loose customers just by acting the way they are. I am a fan of Scentsy wax & I will buy from them once in a great while, over priced? absolutely!, but they do have scents that you can't get anywhere else, but I will recycle my other candle wax wether or not it voids the warrenty of my scentsy warmer....It's really not that hard to replace a light bulb socket....real simple actually....Do what you gotta do tosave cash in these hard economice times people. :o)

Next thing you know, people will be saying not to make your own Xmas ornaments or makeup because hallmark and Avon will suffer!!! Crazy.

  55. Great idea! Thanks for posting and please post more ideas if you get them. I love the smell of candles in my home, do I have a Scentsy? No, because I can't afford one, I have one of them from good ole Walmart and it even melts the Scentsy cubes just fine. Yes I did buy some cubes one time to try them out, but I have bills to pay also so I really can't afford to buy more of them. I will however be trying this with my leftovers. Thanks again.

To those consultants who bashed this blog: Shame on you

    ReplyDelete
  56. Yayayayay! :D As a fifteen year old girl, I don't have the money nor time to smell a thousand different scents and then pay $15 per small pack of wax to fill my Scentsy when it runs out. This is much easier! (And candles are always on sale!)

  57. Genius!!
I absolutely love this idea. I mean I do like a few scents that the all mighty SCENTSY doesn't sell ; ]
    Love the blog btw.

  59. I have to say...after reading these comments I'm a little annoyed at Scentsy....I don't have one and after reading some of these comments I don't intend to get one. When I want to change the scent in my warmer I put it in the freezer for five minutes and it pops out. I appreciate the idea that she was giving and will def use it...but seriously....a little annoyed at the comments from people.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I, too, am annoyed that Scentsy or affiliates would be upset about this. There are TONS of DIY for crafty, thrifty people or even those of us struggling to make ends meet- we have to take alternatives to purchasing high dollar items. I personally don't really care if it voids my warranty.. how would they ever know I used it and if they had such confidence in their product why would they state that is voids their warranty? It's wax......

    Great idea! Thanks so much!

    ReplyDelete
  61. Just so everyone knows scentsy wax is non toxic using other cabdle wax voids thia so be careful and make sure if u have a dog or child they stay away. That is wh scentsy is soo great. And the ones at walmart are no way equal a child pet ir yourself could get burned from the wax veing to hot and if accidently ingested it could harm you really baf. Cute idea just be careful and do your research. :)

    ReplyDelete
  62. P.s. not all scentsy consultants are complaining I for one think its a great idea and juat wanted people to know about the scentsy being non toxic. Its your choice and feel free to make it. And I'm a single mother too with no help from the father and started selling scentsy while I was a full time student to try to get some extra cash I wish people would stop using I'm a single mother as a crutch and excuse. No offense to anyone at all. Not all scentsy consultants bash odeas I for one think its great just be aware of evryything if one of the reasons u purchasedscentay was cuz its non toxic and doesn't get hpt enougj to burn

    1. Aren't Scentsy melts made from paraffin? Paraffin is a petroleum by-product which is toxic. Also, doesn't Scentsy use fragrance oils? Fragrance oils are made from chemicals and are often a petroleum by-product as well... which again is toxic.

I make my own from beeswax or soy candles scented with essential oils. Non-toxic and affordable. It's a win-win for me. :)

  63. Thanks for the great idea! My husband is obsessed with certain yankee candle scents and I am always worried he is going to burn down the house! lol. Hot wax should be kept away from children and pets anyways, so the comment about ingesting it is crazy. Paraffin (sp) wax get really hot too, and it can hurt if it touches skin. I use pariffin all the time for manicure. I will be hunting down a warmer in the near future so I can use this awesome idea.

    ReplyDelete
  64. WOW! What a great idea for those candles that have buried the wick in melted wax or are all burned in the center but not around the edges. Scentsy doesn't own the patent for ideas. My wax warmer was purchased WAAAAAAAAAAAY before the "Scentsy" brand was ever created, so it too was was "stolen" so I can't believe the way these consultants are acting. It's a way to salvage the rest of your used candles or create the scents you prefer that they don't currently offer. How DARE we as free consumers try to be creative and save some of the money we've already spent on candles? I personally have found very few of their scents that I prefer but LOVE Yankee Candle and Bath & Body Works scents. Now, if I have some left in the jar (as not all turn to liquid when lit) I know what to do so I'm not throwing out a bunch of scented wax! And as for price, I buy all my candles after season and on sale so I'm not paying full retail (before others start to comment on the price of Yankee or B&BW over Scentsy...I don't pay full retail!) Pinning it NOW on my board! Thanks for the GREAT idea!

  65. Love the DIY idea and greatly appreciate it and am posting a link to my fb page. It's awesome! I think I'm going to avoid Scentsy like the plague, though. I can't believe that a person can't offer a fabulous idea like this without something negative being said. And by multiple people. We're all trying to keep as much of our money as we can and we shouldn't have to apologize for it. If it were my blog, I would have apologized to no one.

  67. Ladies, get real. In this day and age people are looking for ways to do creative things with what they have.

If the Scentsy ladies are feeling a loss of income due to this, I have to say, get another job.

Once I purchase an item, I should be able to do whatever I feel like doing with it.

Shame on you Scentsy ladies for trying to make anyone feel like they are doing anything wrong.

  69. This was a great post! I switched from Scensty to Yankee Candle tarts, mostly because the Scentsy rep I was ordering from never had sales on the product and YC sells their tarts as low as 50 cents each. It's sad that Scentsy reps immediately jumped on you for trying to save money or even for just trying to use a fragrance they do not offer. Can they say that they have never purchased anything on sale or with a coupon? I doubt it.

  70. I use the better homes and gardens wax scents from walmart for 2.00, Also the candle lite parties webpage has some AMAZING scents, I think better than scentsy for 5 dollars for 9 cubes. I have a warmer, but it's not from Scentsy. I thought they were too over priced and I have a really cute one.

  71. I am a Scentsy Director and found this on Pinterest. I'm shocked from any consultant who believes this is a bad idea, because I find it very helpful and will share this idea with my customers. I have even posted on my own Pinterest page. Times are hard. Saving money in anyway possible (and this is one!) I give a HUGE high five to this idea! I do not believe this idea will hurt sales of any direct sales company or anyone....it is the reactions from the consultants and their rude comments on any blog that will hurt sales. Scentsy is about providing the BEST customer service to our customers.....end of story.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I totally agree! If sales of Scentsy are hurt because of a DIY blog then the sales reps just aren't doing their job well enough. Selling something is all about how you approach the customer. I know that if the lady that I buy my Scentsy from attacked me like some reps did this blogger then I would stop buying from her. I probably wouldn't stop buying Scentsy though, I would just find a different rep to buy from...one that is pleasant...

    2. I have heard several stories of attacks like this, from sentsy people, on people who make their own candles and wax melts. Because of this bullish behavior i won't use them.

  72. Thanks for the idea, I saw it on pintrest, did not know about scentsy and other than some of the rude comments from those that sale, I may purchase a warmer. All things considered, would that not help those that sale scentsy? Besides, eventually you will run out of all your old candles anyway, right?

  73. I think your idea is very creative and I applaud you for your ingenuity and managing to save some money during a difficult economy and still enjoy your favorite scents. 74. Power to the People! LOL. This is quite the thread. I have a scentsy warmer and some scentsy wax. The scentsy wax scent does not last. I work 12 hours shifts in an office where I use my warmer and have to put at least 3 cubes in per shift. I will def be using this idea to melt down all of my old candles, to save ME money. Thanks for SHARING!

  75. KUDOS to you .. so what if the warranty is voided .. it's yours you can use whatever candle scent you want .. if the candle warmer gives out on you then just go to walmart and buy one for $5 .. i bought mine from walmart and used it for keeping my coffee warm while playing on the computer .. i'm sure it's not the purpose intended but it works.. i say either they come up with the scent you love or stop trying to micro manage what you use your warmer for.. b'sides .. how they gonna know you didn't use THIER product???? two thumbs up for figuring out a way to keep your fav scent in the air :)

  76. Thank you for the tip! I will be melting my old Partylite candles that are 1/2 way burned down into cubes and using them in my non-scentsy warmer that I received as a birthday gift. I wish I could afford to buy a scentsy brand warmer - they are cute but WAY over priced.

    ReplyDelete
  77. You can buy small crock pots at thrift stores and use those to melt down the wax and also use them as a Scentsy burner.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Ok I've only read a few comments, but I just had to say something. First off, I am a Scentsy consultant. Anyone who is getting upset or offended can take a flying leap. Someone said this went against what the company stood for? No...the whole premise is to warm wax instead of burn it, thus creating a safer, healthier way to scent your home. You are doing exactly that. Of course Scentsy feels they have created a superior product (what company doesn't? you don't succeed if you don't believe in yourself)and they obviously don't want you using other waxes. But its more than just about money. It voids your warranty because if you use a product that Scentsy didn't make, and has no idea if it's ingredients are safe or compatible with both the finishes and temperatures of the warmers, then people could "accidentally" ruin their warmers left and right. This would cause Scentsy to have to replace warmers over and over because something that wasn't designed to be used in it was. They also cannot guarantee that this won't pose a fire risk. They are all very legitimate business and safety concerns.

That being said, your idea is GREAT! I didn't do anything with my old candles for months after converting, because I couldn't stand to see them go to waste. I finally remembered that my mom uses old candles to make fire starters (wax mixed with sawdust and put into a small paper food sample cup with a wick) for my grandparents who use a wood stove to heat their cabin. So I found a place to donate all my old candles :)

I think this is a great idea, given you understand and are willing to risk the warranty void, and are careful of the potential for safety hazards. I personally know people who've had off brand wax catch on fire, and off brand warmers as well - so be careful!

You're fabulous for sharing, and don't let anyone get you down. If they are a successful Scentsy consultant and do their job well, they will not be threatened by your suggestion. It's not your fault if they loose business!

  81. All wax even Scentsy has a flash point, thats pretty much common sense. So in response to the comment above anout how its not supposed to be used ... I have this to say. You advertise your warmers do not get as hot as any other warmers, correct? Why in the world then would a tart warmer who is suppose to stay cooler than any other be able to catch a wax tart on fire when most waxes have a flash point of 200 degrees... some a little lower but its a good average?

I have 8 yankee tart burners that were created years before Scentsy was even thought of and not once have they ever said " oh dont use other waxes you might burn your house down"

I make candles and tarts. Any candle and tarts that you can buy ARE MADE to be burned in a burner style fashion. They do not make burners that get hot enough for the wax to reach a flash point.

So what I am hearing is buy or 40.00 tart burners but use no other wax thats been around for ages because it could catch your house on fire even though ours our suppose to be the coolest burning around.. WOW... that makes sense.

  83. I use a Gold Canyon warmer (which uses interchangeable scent "pods" which are way easier to switch out) and could see using this idea with an empty pod.

All the Gold Canyon candles extinguish about 1/4 inch from the bottom (safety wick so the glass doesn't get too hot) and I always recycle my extra wax into votives. I've thought about emptying a scent pod and doing this.

To melt the extra wax, I place the candle in the oven, on a cookie sheet at the lowest setting (about 125 degrees). It takes a while for the wax to liquefy completely, about 45 minutes - 2 hours, depending on how much wax is in there. http://www.dfwgoldcanyon.com to see more about Gold Canyon

  89. These Scensty Consultants that are getting upset go to show why they are consultants and not business women. Brand loyalty is hard for people to stray away from even during economic hardships. You were simply showing a way to use up leftover candles. Its not like millions of women are going out, buying candles, melting them down, and freezing them. The ONLY thing that would cause Scentsy to lose business over, would be the people representing them in a negative way.

  90. Any DIY project takes away from some business. So, to say it's unfair to the scentsy business is a bit much, in my opinion.

The exclusivity of scentsy is exactly why I won't buy one. I did get one for Christmas, but I don't use it because I'm not a fan of the scentsy scents and the scents don't last very long. With two kids, a dog, and a rabbit, I need a long lasting scent.

Thank you for this post. I will be using this in my NON-Scentsy warmers. =)

  92. Great idea, and I do NOT think you should remove this! #1 you can use this idea for many candles warmers not just Scentsy. #2 Scentsy products should hold their own, if the consultants are worried this idea with trump their sales then it is because the customer chooses something else, the Scentsy customers will STILL be customers. Thank you for sharing. I will continue to buy all candles including Scentsy that come out with smells that I love :)

    ReplyDelete
  93. Not everyone can afford Scentsy because it is expensive. You can buy warmers elsewhere too, not just from them. I don't see why people are begrudging you trying to save money and not waste a product you already have. Thanks for the great idea!

    ReplyDelete
  94. wow, all the complaining from Scentsy people makes me not want to buy Scentsy.. which I have an entire cupboard full of...

I make candles, and I recycle... I've been doing this for years to recycle old candles/candle stubs into new candles.. because I am green.. and now am about to lose my job so I can't afford Scentsy..

let me elaborate on your post a bit-Silicone ice cube trays work GREAT for this, and it's super easy to pop the cubes out. For making new candles- you can get trays in fun shapes to make fun shape chunks for candles.

don't take this post down- I even put my scentsy in ice cube trays to save it for later instead of trying to pour back into the container.

  101. I am also a Scentsy consultant, and i have to say i am embarrassed. The company's main values are to be positive and have Scentsy spirit. 99% of us are great people and will give the shirts off their backs. Our motto is to "give more than we take". So please dont judge all of us by a few bad eggs. I don't sell Scentsy to make it a career and roll around in riches. I do it because i believe in the product and i like knowing my friends and family are safe without open flames in their homes. It has been a great way for me to be a stay at home mom and also have a hobby/part time job and do something for myself. I truly love the company and their values and giving nature. The few negative comments made were NOT made on behalf of Scentsy, but rather those particular people. I love Scentsy, i love your idea. Carry on. <3 (oh, and we have warmers starting as low as $18 in the closeout section, and many consultants do give out great specials on top of Scentsy's monthly specials, for those that expressed that you love Scentsy but cant afford it. Just trying to help.) :-D

  104. I think people are overreacting a bit. I'd like to go to their house & see the ways they cut corners and get on to them for taking money away from the people working in the factory or for the company. I'm ALWAYS looking for a way to save money here & there or new & inventive ways to use up the odds & ends in my home. This blogger clearly wasn't out to hurt scentsy or tell people they should do that instead. She's just offering a way that she found to use her favorite scent (that scensty does't sell) & to use up old candles. I really don't think this one blog is going to cause family's to go hungry & scentsy to fail.

Also, get a real job, scentsy consultants. "

Awesome! Thanks so much blogger for posting this. It is absurd that all these people who rip people off regularly with "special" wax are freaking out. It would be like the Avon lady getting mad if you bought makeup from someone else, or the Tubberware lady mad because you bought Rubbermaid or Saran wrap. Move along! We don't care! So the blogger actually made me interested in a non burning wax method that I would have purchased from you.... But then the reps convinced me via their comments I'd never want to support a company like this. And the KICKER that Walmart deserves my money more.

She got her money, paid her bills, blah, blah, blah. I love this idea, paraffin is a petroleum byproduct, ICK! I am a beekeeper and make my own candles, melts etc. I do buy Yankee Candle and such and place them on coffee cup warmer and they work great. AND if you want to get technical about it, craft shows use to sell the the fancy tea cups over a small bulb for the same purpose. Thank you for recycling, us Earth Chiks love it.

  109. Found this on pinterest and a new follower.

I have been using a plate type warmer for my candles for years and in every room. I always hated burning candles because I didn't like the smell after blowing them out, even the soy candles had that smell also. This is a great way to recycling candles that don't burn all the way. I have many candles that I like and a few that are large jar candles. This will help me be able to make smaller jar candles from them and to combined some of the scent that I have and see if I like the combination. Thanks for the idea and keep blogging.

I will be using this also as a gift idea, since homemade gifts are the best.

Thanks for post and I will be repinning this on pinterest.

As for the few Scentsy consultants that downed this blog shame on you.

  110. I hate wasting the wax from old candles and the Scentsy bars. I used to break up the candles, put them in an old coffee can and then make a double boiler by putting a wash cloth in the bottom of a pan, setting the coffee can on top and then filling the pot part way with water. I melted the wax and dipped pinecones in it to make pretty fire starters. It also looked nice in a basket by the fire.

Maybe after the scent is burned off the wax you've repurposed you might try this craft to further recyle.

I'm just sorry about the haters. I love your idea and I am a Scentsy Consultant.

  111. We buy Scentsy items, but I am personally very sensitive to how strong the Scensty scents are. We have a very open Living/dining/kitchen area with 18 foot ceilings so we use the scensty in there (and love it). But when it comes to my bedroom or the bathrooms the scensty scents make me sick to my stomach and give me horrible headaches, even after cutting the cubes into 1/4 and only using the 1/4. So this idea is great for me. Now I went to Walmart and bought one of the $15 Better homes and Gardens warmers so I wouldn't ruin my Scentsy warmer. I have to say that this has changed my world. And I've been using the old candle jars in other DIY projects. Thank you for such a wonderful Idea.

  114. I too found this post on Pinterest and thought I would check it out. Tiffany your blog is great by the way...anyway, I read through the posts, yes each one and what really saddened me was the hurtful comments that said "get a real job". Maybe you are blessed to have a great job or lucky enough to not have to work, but there are a lot of people out there that are out of work for various reasons. I for one, was downsized 5 years ago from a $47k a year job, and found out quickly that when someone reaches my age no one wants them...I am over qualified to be a file clerk, but under qualified to work in the field that I have worked in for 25 years...go fig. Anyway, yes I finally turned to party plan. I found a great new company that just launched Sept 2011. I won't mention it here, but you can visit my blog for more info. Ground floor is pretty cool. So please don't go bashing people that choose party plan. Because this is a "real job" for me. There are a lot of great people out there in Avon, Mary Kay, Tupperware, Pampered Chef, etc. Remember...“When you buy from a small mom business, you are not helping a CEO buy a third vacation home. You are helping a little girl get dance lessons, a little boy get his team jersey, a mom put food on the table, a dad pay a mortgage, or a student pay for college. Our customers are our shareholders – and they are the ones we strive to make happy. Thank you for supporting small businesses!” -Unknown

  115. America is still a free country. I like the blogger idea it's a frugal money saving tip. If the company doesn't like it that's their problem. Instead of attacking their potential customers they should try and capitalize on the idea and work WITH their customers and not against them. I don't buy stuff to support and pay other peoples salaries, I buy stuff I want or need. This company and their supporters need to get off their high horse.

  116. Awesome idea! I never thought about using ice cube trays before either!!
And I'm also glad to hear Scentsy is no longer a business! What terrible representation if the caliber of Directors were on par with the negative ones who posted here early in the thread.

  117. I love this blog! Haha! Although I love the concept of Scentsy, it is very overpriced and certainly something I cannot afford on my budget! Sorry to the reps, but you do what you have to do!

  118. All you Scentsy people need to stop haring on this lady for being so clever!!! Everyone needs to earn a living, but people also need to save a buck or two. Don't hate her for discovering something new.

  119. Saw this on Pinterest & it is brilliant!!
As for Scentsy... I LOVE how they act like they are the frontier for melting wax. I remember my mom having a similar plug-in-warmer for my entire childhood & it was long before Scentsy came along. Walmart has carried them for years, actually I just bought her another one last year for her birthday (not Scentsy of course *insert jaw drop* ). Why would I pay for an over-priced knock off of something that has been around for-ev-er (well, for my 30 years at least) when I can buy the 'original' for cheaper? Scentsy reps, take your gripes elsewhere & consider finding a 'legitimate' job that doesn't rip off other products ;) Sad, but true, nothing but truth here
Rock on with your awesome idea of utilizing that last bit of candle was I have been accumulating in my little glass jars :)

  120. I sell Scentsy myself, but this is a brilliant way to keep stuff out of landfills too it works for you. Just an FYI though, you can mix the fragrances so you can get your own unique scent when you're done using up all your old wax.

Also, I just read through this thread, and checked the company website, so I wanted to clarify a few things. 1) There are more Scentsy Consultants who have given POSITIVE feedback about this post than negative feedback. So as far as I can tell, I think some people who don't like the product have been a bit too sensitive about the "few" negative consultant remarks. 2) As far as I can tell, there is nothing on the website that is creating an "Upheaval" or indicating that they company is up in arms about this. The company stands behind a good quality product and I was always taught through the company handbook and my mentors that if a customer is not 100% in love with the product that they take it back to exchange it for something else.

This is America, the blogger here has every right to post her ideas, this honestly will not hurt Scentsy's business, but those consultants, as horrible of reps as they are, have every right to point out the risks of using products that are not intended for Scentsy warmers. I honestly am so tired of Americans being so sensitive to anyone who opposes their views and attacks them with really immature insults. Why can't we all just grow up?!

  124. I guess everyone up in roar about Scentsy doesn't pay attention to the fact you can buy the exact same product at Walmart and you're in no way causing any sort of damage to the immense Scentsy empire. Excuse me while I roll my eyes. I love Scentsy. I have a couple of their warmers and I buy a stock of my favorite scents (mainly My Dear Watson) everytime someone I know hosts a party. You know what else I like though? Not wasting money. If I buy a candle, then I'm going to use every last drop of it, and that I do, and I use one of my Scentsy warmers to do it. I had just been using my hotplate to warm the candle and dumping the wax directly into the Scentsy top. THIS is a BRILLIANT idea and I'll be buying an old fashion ice tray so I can do this.

  125. It is ridiculous if you are upset by this post. If you sell Scentsy and think that the product is superior, then you shouldn't be worried that one blog post is going to destroy the company. Have you ever thought about how many competitors exist? Perhaps your energy could be better spent bombarding your friends and family with merchandise catalogs, instead of posting negative comments on someone's personal blog.

  126. I just bought my first Scentsy plug in warmer about a week ago. The wax brick I bought was only $5, not sure which ones are $15. ??? This is a great idea to use up some old candles, but I will probably still buy from my local rep too. Thanks for the tip. :-) I'm a Thirty-One Gifts consultant by the way so if anyone needs a thermal tote or a utility tote for your Scentsy supplies, I will direct ship to you for free ($4 value). Sorry for the shameless plug. :-)

  129. P.S.....along this idea.....if you are looking for the 15watt bulbs for your scentsy warmer you can find them in Lowe's. They cost more ($4.00 for 2) but you can get them quickly & in large supply. Just an FYI for you.

  130. I like this idea. I didn't have a wax warmer so I use my old potpourri heater. I have it plugged in for days and have had no problems. I had the wax cubes from Walmart and they work fine.

  131. I love this idea!!! I think all of the people complaining about Scentsy's income can settle down. Are there people FREAKING out from Dove because we can make home made shampoo??? No. Quit being rude to someone who was intelligent enough to come up with this idea. She shouldn't have to WASTE her money on Scentsy's overpriced products when her idea works just fine. And people who've asked her to remove this need to really get a life. Just saying! Good for you for sharing your clever idea and hope to see many more!

  132. I love this idea, I use a small electric slow cooker to use my old candles in I have a scentsy and I really do not see any diffence. Some of the remarks on here really silly, I know I am for any idea that will save money. So keep on posting. It is really not helping their busness.

  133. Another idea, which I have been doing, is using soy wax flakes and essential oils in my scentsy. I sprinkle the flakes into the warmer, add a few drops of essential oil, stir and let it melt. For about $20, I have enough wax and oils to last the better part of a year burning my scentsy most of the day!

  134. I love this Idea! I have one that I got from Walmart and I love it but I have over a dozen candles just sitting around now. This will make them go away! YEAH!! I also love the Idea from Anonymous. About the soy wax flakes. My sister in law has a scentsy and I do love the products I have not found one scent me and my husband can agree on, He is really the picky one. lol.

  135. I'm a hardcore scentsy junkie but love this idea. Goodbye candles in the closet! I just have to laugh though, the number of people complaining about scentsy consultants "complaining" far outnumbers what I saw as scentsy people explaining the warranty and system works. Maybe I'm jaded because I love the product so much but who's really "attacking" who???

  138. I can't believe how many people want to jump you over this great idea! What happened to freedom of speech?! I too love Scentsy, but never could afford any of my own or have friends that could afford to buy from me if I had a party. For those of you that think she should remove this post and think that Scentsy is so great and wonderful, I don't think that you are going to loose business over a small percentage of people that are willing to give this a try and totally stop using Scentsy. If it truly is that wonderful, I am sure your regular customers are still going to be calling you and if not, time to find a new job. The economy isn't the best right now, so if saving money on buying cheaper candles is what helps than so be it. I don't feel sorry for people that have home business' and whine about supporting the consultants, cause they have bills and families to feed...don't we all? Don't be dumb, if you could save a buck by cutting corners you would and the only reason you are whining about it is because poor you will loose sales. Reminds me a people that feel bad for waitresses and want to leave them a big tip because they don't get paid well...that is their problem, not mine. I have a job and I don't get paid as much as I think I am worth, I work in a nursing home and work my but off, do you see me getting tips...no. If your job isn't what you thought it would be and if someone voicing their opinion or idea is going to jeopardize that, than maybe it isn't the job for you. Your job is to tell your customers how wonderful your product is and why they should stick to only your product and if it is because you don't carry a certain scent, maybe you should work on more scents so you don't loose customers.

  139. unless i may have woken up in a different country... i am pretty sure we have the right to do whatever we want and do as we please.. lets be honest.. first off how can u possibly prove that the product was "misused" or if it was considered to be "voided by warranty" honestly unless you are the company owner.. quit complaining.. i am sure everyone has done things that are considered "bad" to another company.. for example cutting your tags off of your mattress or your pillows.... hmmmm doesn't that tag claim that it is illegal? and if you "claim" you haven't done something like that, even though it is so miniscule and not to be able to be proven.. really get over it.. freedom of speech, right to use products as you see fit.. once your company sells it, really unless there was physical abuse.. you really legally can't prove it was misused.. also for that candle warmer.. just buy another brand.. theeehehee they are like 5-10 bucks at bed bath and beyond! lol all the warmers do the EXACT SAME THING! and companies wonder why they are going out of buisness! geesh! i dislike self-centered, bored and contradicting people... grrrrr... honestly.. im assuming all the people that claim that you voided the warranty and so on are all females! I am a female myself.. but i guess my point is that men really dont give a flying donkey what you do after you buy their product.. lol man get a life people!!!

  140. I bought my Scentsy warmers with my own money, I can do what I want with it. It cost $30, it can be replaced if something happens to it no matter what wax I choose to use in it. Personally, I think they get way too hot and burn the scent off too quickly. A coffee cup warmer with a small glass bowl works better and the scent lasts longer, just doesn't look as pretty. I use soy tarts that I make myself, btw. I think the idea in this blog is great!

  141. I love your idea!!...I had bought, years ago at the dollar store, a really small crock pot. I started using it for left over candles and that liquid pot pouri. It worked great!! As far as the scentsy peeps gettin ignorant, ignore it. I've used scentsy for two years now, and I'm sure the company wouldn't want you treated this way anyhow. If a company trains people to act this foolish and childish, then I say forget that company and move on!! My EX-consultant sold me some old cubes. The scent only lasted a few days then smelt kind of burnt. I didn't stop using scentsy because of a bad consultant. I say you payed for it, it's yours, nuff said!!!!

  143. All of you Scentsy Consultants should be ASHAMED of yourselves! What is WRONG with you?! I'm a consultant too & it's people like you that makes us ALL look bad! To the author of this blog - you have a brilliant idea & I thank you for posting this! WE ARE IN A RECESSION! Not everyone has extra $$ to spend on wax darn it! If you have extra candles at home (and we all do) then what's the harm? Seriously - get over the "voiding warranty" thing - they say this to "scare" you not to use any other wax! There is NO Scentsy police & once you buy something you can do whatever you want with it. I'm so sick & tired of you ALL being "Out for the Money" because truly you are only harming yourselves & the Scentsy Name. Think about before you post your negative remarks next time!

    ReplyDelete
  144. Oh no! I've been using my warmer to cook my meth. WILL THAT VOID MY WARRANTY? :O Lol. Geez. I could understand the consultant uproar if you were bashing the company. But kudos to them, they turned me off to the overpriced, over-hyped fad all on their own. :) And yes, it is just a fad. Know what happens to fads and the people that push them? They...wait for it....burn out.

  145. Thank you for your brilliant idea! I have no clue what Scentsy is... never heard of it but if it's just as expensive as all the other "party" items I think I'll pass. Not to mention everyone complaining makes me want to boycott the product anyways. You really don't know the importnace in life if your worried about what other people are doing with their own CANDLE WARMERS.

  147. While the idea of putting them in ice cube trays is a new idea to me, melting down old candles to get the maximum use out of them is not a new idea. I have been doing this for years because who likes to have 1/3 of their money wasted on candle especially when you love the scent. And the ice cube trays will make it look much nicer than my chopped up version I am sure! Thanks for sharing.

    ReplyDelete
  148. To be honest, I'm too lazy to bother melting bits of candle, and too cheap to buy Scentsy. Not that I'd give my money to any of these screaming banshees on here, anyway. Some of these ladies need to be muzzled.

This Much Card and a Kid Canvas

Father's Day ideas continued... I decided to show you the things Harvey and I made to give to Justin. First up... "I Love You This Much Card": It's super easy... 1. Trace your child's hand, then cut out two copies. My paper was double sided so I made sure that when the thumbs match up - the yellow side would be inside, and the blue side would be outside. 2. Cut out a strip of paper and fold it accordion style. Use letter rub-ons or stickers to add the words "I Love You" on the outside, and "This Much" on the strip of paper.  3. Glue the ends of your accordion strip on the insides of the hands and your card is done. :) Kid Canvas: Then Harvey and I made a little canvas (4 inches x 4 inches) to hang on the wall in Justin's office at work. I purchased small ones so we could add to them each year and hang them in one grouping. I prepainted the canvas in green, then set Harvey in the bathtub with blue paint and

Thinkin' About Dad

So.. Father's Day is in 10 days. Yeah - already. Here are a few ideas for you... Shirt Card: All you need are two papers, and two buttons. 1. Cut one paper into a piece 4 inches by 11 inches. Fold it in half so you have a card base that opens "up" and measures about 4 inches wide by 5.5 inches tall. 2. Measure one inch from the fold and draw a line 3/4 inches toward the center on both sides of your card.  Use scissors to cut through both papers at the marks. 3. Fold these pieces in to the center of the card, so the top corners meet in the middle. 4. Download this tie pattern... Here is an alternate link to download the file: Shirt Card Template ...and use it to trace and cut a tie out of your second paper. Glue your tie in the center of the card. 5. Add buttons to the collar to make it more realistic. (Or, if you want to do it digitally, go here to download an awesome template from ScrapMatters.com) Here are some clutter-free Father's Day gif

DIY Canvas Car Playmat

So, my baby turned two yesterday. And I just KonMaried my house and I am SO. OVER. the toys. And the kid clutter. Plus he has both a big brother and a big sister, and they have toys that cover all the basics. But we still have loads of birthdays and Christmases in our future, so what in the world am I going to give? Anyway, my internal brain rant ended when I came up with this idea. It meets all of my current criteria: It is durable.  It is open-ended and fosters imaginative play. It folds up small and can be stored with like-items in our toy storage system. It encourages cooperative play. My hubby had a mat like this one when he was a kid, so I asked my mother-in-law to give me some details on how to make our own. I bought 60 inches x 45 inches of duck canvas and ran a zigzag stitch down the raw edges. Then, (after planning out the city on graph paper measured and accurately scaled proportionately, then folding the canvas to help rescale my plan) I drew in the c
