Flaming Gorge {part 1}

The Green River

We decided to run the Green River. We asked around and were told it was mellow enough for Avery so we pumped up the rafts and headed out.

Steve's family rented a raft for their family, and we tied both of Jud's rafts together for ours (and Karen rode with us). It was so much work rowing those rafts! I'm not sure if it was because there were only two of us working, or if it was because having the rafts tied together made them extra wide and not very ergonomic.

It took us about 4 hours to finish the 7 mile stretch. I was a little worried about getting rained on, or about how Avery was doing (she was really tired, but didn't want to fall asleep in her life jacket).

Jud was disappointed that the fishing didn't really work out. Everytime he would stop to fish, the rafts would need steering again.

At one point, Harvey said he needed to go potty, so Jud held him in the river so he could go. He was kicking like crazy, but wouldn't go potty. He wouldn't even talk to tell us what was up... We pulled him out and gave him a towel.

Jud said he would jump in so Harvey could see it wasn't scary, and realized the real reason he was acting funny: that water was FREEZING!

(Do you see that grin? Maybe he was secretly glad his daddy experienced the cold water??)

Man, but the scenery was beautiful.

The Dam

It was fun learning how much work went into building this dam. We even got to see the motors that Brett worked on several years ago. He was proud to say he was part of that job during the tour guide's speil.

We thought it was interesting that they couldn't tell us how thick the dam was ... we asked and the tour guide said she wasn't allowed to reveal that information.

We stopped for a few family pictures along the way...
...and we managed to get one photo with everyone! (Although, I'm not sure why we didn't pose with the dam in the background?!)

Toward the end of the tour, they allowed us to feed the fish.

The kids loved throwing the food down to see all of the fish swarm together and eat it up.

I thought Avery looked so cute sitting all snug in the backpack.
But that backpack got a little uncomfortable after a while, so Justin and I had to switch off.

I'll be back with more soon...
