Our General Conference Center

I know, no one is thinking about General Conference right now. But tonight I'm showing my board to my mom's Relief Society group, and I wanted to have the printables available to them if they decided to complete this project. If any of you are interested... you have three and a half months to complete it. :)

Two days before General Conference, I stumbled across this idea for engaging young children.... and I thought it was absolutely amazing. (And so are most of the ideas found on Jen Lund's blog - check it out!)

One of the main reasons I love this idea, is that it doesn't just distract young children from being disruptive during Conference, but it engages them and encourages them to listen! I'm not gonna lie. It took time to put together, but I am positive that Harvey will enjoy working with this board. That will hopefully translate into Justin and I being able to listen, and that will make all of my hard work worth it in the end.

Here's how it works...
Everything uses Velcro to move and switch around speakers and pictures depending on what is happening during Conference. (I found clear Velcro dots in the craft isle at Walmart, and if you look really closely at the photos you can see the little Velcro circles.) The clock has moveable hands and the little temple identifies the session of Conference.

All of the speakers (there are pictures for all the auxiliaries, and 6 general "man" pictures to represent anyone from the Quorum of the Seventies) start out in the pockets on the left side. At the beginning of a talk, Harvey can find their picture in the folders, then move him or her to the podium. After they are finished speaking, he can move them to their red chair. The first presidency sits in the top three chairs, the Quorum of the 12 sits in the next two rows, and the others just sit in the bottom two rows according to the order in which they spoke.

While the speaker is at the podium, Harvey can add topics cards to the speech bubble. This is what it would look like if Elder Holland was speaking about choosing the right, the holy ghost, and obedience...

The topics cards are on the right side of the board when they are not in use...

During a song, Harvey can move the arrows depending on who is singing and he can move pictures of the conductor and the organist(s).

UPDATE (3/20/2014):
I've been wanting to add a few things to our board, and I finally made the time to sit down and get it done. I'm so excited for my kids to use the updated board in a couple of weeks!

Here is the whole board, so you can see where I added new items:

I wanted to change the music section a little, because I noticed that Harvey didn't really do anything with it unless I prompted him. I figured it was probably because he couldn't read the words, so now that section is non-reader friendly. I split the two arrows up - one for the choir, and one for who is singing (men, women, or both). I also added little pictures of an organ and a music stand for the conductor. I also included both a male and a female guest conductor, and a guest organist.

I also added a map. Jen Lund had a map on her original board, and I went back and forth on including it due to space, but I finally decided to make it work. I added an airplane, like she has, to move around any time a country is mentioned. I also added 5 of our favorite temples, so my children can place them on the map wherever new temples are announced.

I also liked her idea of placing her family members in attendance on their couch watching Conference, but I couldn't figure out where to add that feature due to space. Now I have added a picture of our family on the couch to move from session to session instead of the temple. (This isn't included in the download... for obvious reasons, but the temple is still there.)

I also wanted to add a little more diversity to our anonymous Quorum of the 70s guys, since there are men called from all over the world, after all. I added a couple more skin colors.

Lastly, I added a spot for my kids to write in a couple of the statistics given during General Conference; total members of the church, full-time missionaries, and total operating temples in the world. (Don't trust those numbers, I just guessed for the picture.) The dry erase marker will wipe off the contact paper with a tissue.

(end edit)

Isn't this idea amazing?! Jen Lund offered to e-mail all of her files upon request, but she was in the hospital having a sweet baby boy during Conference weekend. I got so antsy/excited about this idea that I compiled my own files... and then she e-mailed me back. She said she didn't mind if I shared my files, so here you go! (I found most of the files on lds.org.)

Here are all of the printouts for the board. You'll have to print a couple of the pages more than once, but it's noted in the file. You can preview, print or share from this, but you can't download. See my explanation below. CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD and save this file to your computer.

Here are the topics cards. Print this out twice: adhere one copy to the board, then cut the second copy up for the individual cards. Feel free to use all of my pictures, but if you'd like to personalize your family, father, and mother cards, just cut the label off the bottom and glue it on your own photo. Then laminate. You can preview, print or share from this, but you can't download. See my explanation below. CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD and save this file to your computer.

After I cut out all of the pictures and text, arranged them how I wanted them on the board, and attached them with a glue stick, I covered the board with contact paper. Then I added all of the Velcro circles to everything. I found clear dots at Wal-mart by the scrapbooking supplies for about 4 dollars a pack. (I needed 2 packets, plus a few extra dots to complete the board. (EDIT: with the updates, it's close to 3 packets.)

For the colored pockets, I glued on the labels, laminated them closed, and then used an exact-o knife to slice along the opening (just enough to cut through the laminate to "open" the pocket). I didn't even bother to glue them together first. After laminating, I didn't cut them out separately. It was easier to attach the two pages with pop dots to the board. If you have any questions about how to assemble the board, feel free to e-mail me (dayinmylifeblog@gmail.com) or leave a comment! And if you make one, I would love to see a picture!

I can't wait until General Conference!!!

**Okay... I'm having a little trouble keeping these available to you through box.com. Without boring you with too much detail, I'm only allotted so much bandwidth, and since these files are fairly large (130MB when downloaded together) my 10 GB bandwidth is exceeded fast. Sooooo, I know it's totally confusing, but I like being able to show you a preview of what you are getting and there is also a feature to print right from this blog, so I'm keeping the box.com widgets here. But the links to download, if you so desire, will now be through dropbox.com. If you missed the links earlier, here they are again:

General Conference Board Topics (updated 10/2/18)
**I normally update the original file each time, so you don't need to download or print the updates if you are putting this together for the first time. The updates are just for those who downloaded and put together the board before the new people were called. :)

**But I don't have time to update the original file right now.. make sure you grab the updates you need!

You have some awesome wonderful ideas and this General Conference board is just perfect for my two little boys. Maybe if I start now I can get it done by October. If you don't mind I'll be checking back on your blog for more inspiration from you, because boy do I need it. I'm not creative or crafty, but I do appreciate ideas like this. Thanks!

    1. Wow! Thanks for letting me know. I didn't even know I had a limit...

I just searched it, and box.com gives each account member a certain amount of "sharing" bandwidth each month, once that 1TB is reached, nothing else can be downloaded until the next month. Fortunately, that starts over tomorrow.

In the meantime, I've posted temporary links for you to download the files.

I bought my Velcro dots in the craft section at Walmart. They are about 1/2 inch big, and clear. They are pretty sticky, so it would be hard to peel off, but if that's what your little one is into, there are no guarantees! :)

  36. Amazing! I love this so much. I made one in two days, just in time for Conference. My kids loved it and I fully expect this to become a family tradition the kids fight over when they have kids of their own. Thank you SO much for all the printable!! What a big job. You made the project completely doable for me. I just got put into the primary presidency and I plan to use it in sharing time as well. Look out kids! You are going to learn:) One question. I love the little faceless quorum of the 70 cards because I'm too lazy to print and laminate all the current ones and every time when they change. Do you have a similar card for female speakers. Again, I'm too lazy to print out the current female cards because I know they will change. But the kids definitely missed having a card that represented a female speaker.
Here is where you can see how mine turned out if you're interested. Thanks again so much. Awesome! Loved it!

  42. Thanks so much for sharing this! I have a 15-yr-old, 11-yr-old twins and a 5-yr-old. I made my board with the 5-yr-old in mind--he gets a bit neglected as we tend to gear FHEs, etc to the older boys. But I knew the other kids would love it too. I wanted to share a couple of changes I made to it. First of all, I bought my display board at Walgreens, and it wasn't as big as the one you have, so the topics weren't all going to fit down the side, and the map wouldn't fit on the side piece. So I'm putting the topics and the speaker pictures in a separate binder. I put only 15 chairs on the main section, and put the map at the bottom. The other 12 chairs are on the right side, and I added a laminated lined square so the bigger boys can do a brief summary/suggested title for each speaker's talk. My favorite addition, though, was the idea of my teenager. He wanted me to print off the scripture mastery verses, and when a speaker uses one, he can put it in the "bubble" with the topic pictures! I think this is going to be used for years at our house, and I love how I can adapt it and keep the older boys a part of it!

    4. I made mine in Photoshop. But I have an idea for you: print (either at home or at a store) your family picture small enough to fit inside a 2.5x2.5 square - either eyeball it from a 4x6 picture, or print it wallet sized (sized 2.5x3.5, so you'll cut an inch off). Then print my topics cards as normal, and cut off the white "Family" label from my family picture and glue it right on top of yours. Then laminate. :)

I glued the chairs, map, choirs, podium, flat sheets of topics, etc. on with a glue stick, then covered the entire board with clear contact paper. The only exception was the pockets, which I did laminate, (then sliced open with an exacto knife) then attached with glue dots over the contact paper. Then I added the velcro dots onto everything on top of the contact paper. Hopefully that made sense.

When I originally made my board I totally finished DURING Conference... haha. Good luck with yours! :)

    1. So weird. People have had this problem in the past and I have NO idea why! You could try to print from different places - print directly from the blog, save to your computer and print when opened, etc. Maybe one way will work with your computer and printer? I am so sorry I can't help more!

  57. Thank you so much for making this and letting all us not so creative moms be able to use your idea. Seriously you have no idea how excited I am to make and use this for this conference. My boys (age 1 and 3) i think will totally enjoy it. Thank you so much!!! Your a genius!!!

  58. Hi Tiffany, I'm having trouble printing as well. I didn't have any problems with printing before you put the updates on though. Everything is moved up on the pages so they're getting cut off, and the names of the General YM Presidency and the Primary Presidency prints mixed up and in tiny font. I'm wondering it you might have changed something when you updated?

    1. I am so sorry some of you are having troubles with the document printing. Have you tried printing straight from the blog? Or downloading and then printing from your computer? I can't recreate the problem on my end so I don't know how to help. I don't think I changed how I saved or anything this go around... :(

  61. I printed the updates today (no problems doing it) and found one error--kind of an error. John S Tanner of the Sunday School Presidency was released in June. He's now the president of BYU-Hawaii and Brian K Ashton was put in.

How soon after the announcement of the new apostles will you have their pictures up? My girls are excited to add them to our conference center.

    1. Thanks for the heads up Nicol! I didn't notice the new picture when I updated everything last week. I will try to find time to get his picture up before Conference, but life is a little crazy and I might wait until the new apostles are called and do it all at once. My family is always excited for the new pictures as well, so I try to get everything updated as soon as I can find official individual pictures on lds.org or the lds newsroom. Sometimes that doesn't happen before Conference is over. I will try to get them up as soon as possible! :)

  64. I have to add my thanks here--I have been using your page for the last few years and am SO, SO THANKFUL for this resource!!! I am sorry I have not thanked you for your efforts before. I am so grateful for the time that you take to update everything with the changes each time. We do not have a board just like this, but we use the leaders' pictures on our own "speaker board" and it is a cherished tradition. I have also used many of your topic pictures on cars to a "conference topic train" that we like to build on the wall in our living room. Thank you so much for providing such a valuable resource. Thank you for carving out some of your precious time to maintain this. You have helped our family so much!!!

  107. Can you tell me a little bit about the process of putting it all together? What poster board did you use? Are most things, like the chairs, the map, the podium, etc just glued straight onto the board? Or did you laminate those also? How did you do the pockets? I feel like if things aren't laminated they will get destroyed.

    1. i printed all the chairs, map, podium etc on full sheet label paper (like stickers) then stuck them on the board then I put contact paper over the board then put on sticky velcro to put the laminated pictures etc on it
I think that is all on the post. laminate the pockets folded then slice open at the pocket opening.

This Much Card and a Kid Canvas

Father's Day ideas continued... I decided to show you the things Harvey and I made to give to Justin. First up... "I Love You This Much Card": It's super easy... 1. Trace your child's hand, then cut out two copies. My paper was double sided so I made sure that when the thumbs match up - the yellow side would be inside, and the blue side would be outside. 2. Cut out a strip of paper and fold it accordion style. Use letter rub-ons or stickers to add the words "I Love You" on the outside, and "This Much" on the strip of paper.  3. Glue the ends of your accordion strip on the insides of the hands and your card is done. :) Kid Canvas: Then Harvey and I made a little canvas (4 inches x 4 inches) to hang on the wall in Justin's office at work. I purchased small ones so we could add to them each year and hang them in one grouping. I prepainted the canvas in green, then set Harvey in the bathtub with blue paint and

Thinkin' About Dad

So.. Father's Day is in 10 days. Yeah - already. Here are a few ideas for you... Shirt Card: All you need are two papers, and two buttons. 1. Cut one paper into a piece 4 inches by 11 inches. Fold it in half so you have a card base that opens "up" and measures about 4 inches wide by 5.5 inches tall. 2. Measure one inch from the fold and draw a line 3/4 inches toward the center on both sides of your card.  Use scissors to cut through both papers at the marks. 3. Fold these pieces in to the center of the card, so the top corners meet in the middle. 4. Download this tie pattern... Here is an alternate link to download the file: Shirt Card Template ...and use it to trace and cut a tie out of your second paper. Glue your tie in the center of the card. 5. Add buttons to the collar to make it more realistic. (Or, if you want to do it digitally, go here to download an awesome template from ScrapMatters.com) Here are some clutter-free Father's Day gif
