(Sorry, longest. post. ever!)
A couple of weeks ago, the kids, my mom and I all piled into the car and headed out to Wyoming for my uncle's wedding. It was just a simple affair, but it was so good to get together with family. We don't get to see that side of my family very often. (He's my dad's brother...)
Friday was pretty uneventful. We spent most of the day driving, checked in to our hotel, went out to eat with our little group... then went to bed! Oh yeah, except my mom bought Wasabi flavored trail mix thinking it sounded "fun", and let's just say it was not fun. Who likes Wasabi? (You're crazy!)
Saturday was the wedding. My Uncle and his wife adore golfing, so they chose to get married right above the 18th hole of their favorite course. Harvey loved looking out the window at the different golfers coming through.
The wedding was short and sweet. Their wedding date was 5-12-12 at 12:00pm. (They considered, but decided not to wait until December.)
Seriously... for a novice photographer, it is so hard to take pictures in a dark-ish room with tons of backlight! Regardless of my skills, aren't my uncle and his new wife cute? :)
I made everyone come back in for some pictures with the blinds closed. It was a little better...
Seriously - so great to catch up with all of these great people...
While I was getting Avery ready for the wedding, I noticed a couple of red bumps on her back and under her arm... and after the wedding they had spread quite a bit! I didn't know what they were, but after I called Justin he said they were hives, and probably a reaction to the amoxicillin that she had been taking (for nine days). He had a similar reaction when he was a baby. He told me to get some Benadryl, and to take her to the InstaCare if she had trouble breathing. I stayed calm and cool on the outside, but on the inside I was freaking out. We were on vacation. I didn't know where an InstaCare was. She was exhausted because she didn't have a nap all morning, but I didn't want to leave her to sleep (and possibly stop breathing) in the hotel room with my mom while I went to try and find a store to get medicine. Plus it was Sunday, so I hadn't gotten a callback from Avery's pediatrician office yet.. Agh!
I said a little prayer that I could leave her for a nap, find a store, and get back without any problems. Luckily, my prayers were answered. And the pharmacist was super helpful - and even gave me directions to an InstaCare just in case. Plus, her doctor called back while I was out, and reassured me that in the majority of cases with hives, Benadryl works fine and there is no need to go anywhere. (And luckily, that was the case with us - she did great).
After Avery woke up, we took the kids to the pool. Harvey didn't even wait for me to get in the pool before he started jumping in. I'm so glad he's comfortable in the water!
Avery thought the pool was a little chilly, but she loved thehot warm tub.
Later Saturday night, we went out to dinner at a "nice" restaurant with the wedding party. It was quite the experience trying to figure out a meal that would work with Avery's allergies. I'm not sure that place had to deal with anything like that before. Harvey kept telling the waitress he wanted Mac N' Cheese. She said they could do that, and I didn't think anything of it... until she brought out his meal:
Umm... who thought of putting macaroni and cheese in an edible pouch and deep frying it? Seriously. And why wouldn't the waitress tell me that was the condition it was in? Harvey didn't want anything to do with it. He kept telling me it wasn't Mac N' Cheese. Poor kid. Luckily, I brought my KindleFire, and he was content to watch Alice in Wonderland while the rest of us ate our dinner.
Sunday morning, we woke up early (oh.. the plan of waking up really early, transferring them to the car, and getting them to fall back asleep until "morning" didn't work. At least for Harvey. He was up for the day at 5:30 both travel days.
We stopped at the pioneer historical sites on the way... I'm excited to add them to my church history scrapbook. (I spent a semester at BYU Nauvoo in 2002, and we saw most of the church history sites from Palmyra, New York to Winter's Quarters, Nebraska.)
Independence Rock:
Did you know it's name originated from the idea that pioneers wanted to arrive at this destination by Independence Day to ensure that they would arrive in the Salt Lake Valley before it got too cold?
Sweetwater River:
There is a well-known story among members of the LDS church about some young pioneer boys who carried many of the members of the Martin Handcart Company across this river so the others wouldn't have to touch the freezing cold water.
Devil's Gate:
This fissure through rock is 370 feet high and 1,500 feet long. It was a welcome landmark for weary Pioneers who had been trekking through dry, hot climate for days.
Martin Handcart Historic Site:
We drove through here about 6:30am, so the Visitor's Center wasn't open. We just drove around and got a couple of pictures of the handcarts and such. Can you see that little antelope sitting by the handcarts? I thought it was hilarious!!
Another thing I learned was that the pioneers planted wheat along the trail for those who would later come along. The others could harvest the wheat, feed themselves and their cattle and be rejuvenated halfway through their trek to the Salt Lake Valley. Even today, the wheat still grows on each side of the highway, and local farmers harvest it and feed it to their cattle. Pretty cool!
I could not believe how well Harvey did on the 7 hour drive in the car (both times). I was expecting multiple meltdowns and we didn't have a single one. Avery slept most of the time (probably due to the Benadryl), and Harvey kept himself entertained with toys, books on tape, and movies on my Kindle. Yay!
By the way, Avery's hives looked even worse on Sunday. They had spread to pretty much her entire body. She seemed tired, but didn't seemed bugged by them at all (no scratching at them, or irritability).
Poor thing. These pictures just break my heart!
Luckily, by Tuesday morning, there wasn't a hive in sight.
We got home around 3:00pm, and I walked in to a completely deep-cleaned house. My amazing hubby even scrubbed the toilets, mopped the floors and did laundry. I was so happy! Seriously - Best. Mother's Day. Gift. Ever. Not to mention, he got me a new camera bag. I love it. It's totally utilitarian, but the leathery/pursey-bags aren't really my style, no matter how much I would like to fit in to the current trends.
I dressed the kids up had Justin snap a few pictures of us...
Outtakes:
Later, we headed over to Justin's parents house for dessert with his family. I forgot the camera, but I gave both of our mom's a photo book of Avery. They both loved it!

I looked at that first picture of Avery and thought, "Yup. Those are definitely hives." Poor baby! And poor Mommy! I always get stressed out when I have a kid broken out in hives and unfortunately, it happens all too often around here. We're on day 4 of Malia's first round of amoxicillin and I've got my fingers crossed that there won't be any reactions.
ReplyDeleteI believe I am allergic to ammoxillin. I only had to take it once when I was a kid then didn't again until I was prego with Cecily bcse I had strep. I got itchy feet and hands, and like Avery, on the 9th or 10th day. My mother (not a pediatrician, per say), told me that it usually reacts worse the second time (kind of like bee stings) and not until about 8-10 days after using it. So, now you know what else she is allergic to! :(
